Being Present

The impact of being present

How many times do you catch yourself harkening back to the simpler days of your live indulging in the sweet sense of nostalgia? It’s like a peaceful journey back aboard a vehicle that you are in charge of time, destination and duration.  We may never fully revisit all those poignant moments which define us, just those select few which for one reason or another are categorized as memorable.   It’s a comforting trip to go back in your mind’s eye to those times that we perceive as idyllic.  Sometimes it’s just is what’s needed to envelope yourself in warm nurturing feelings of love, encouragement and security. Just don’t spend too much time there!

Conversely, when we try to live in the future, many of us spend needless and useless  time and worry what our futures holds. Are we going to pass a test?  Get a promotion or raise etc. Our lives are filled with questions to which no one has the answers.  We cause ourselves a great deal of worry and anxiety by spending so much energy just thinking about the if’s and what’s that we lose ourselves into a whirling vortex of anguish and anxiety.

Do  you spend too much of your days vacillating  between past and future?

If so, you may be missing out on one of the most important chapters of your live… THE PRESENT! Think of it like driving a car, if you take your eyes off the road for a brief moment what can happen?  You can imagine right? Well if you are going through life trying to return to the past, or worrying about the future your life is not staying on course! You’re weaving all over the road of your life’s journey!!!!

You need to find that balance between both past and future.

Spend time thinking about your past. Recreate those emotions which help you feel good about your present self. Select those memories that allow moving past that captured moment of time to springboard you into your life now. Let those memories buoy you to be present where you are now.

This is the same for future. By all means indulge yourself to think of your future. Envision all the possibilities that lie ahead. Close your eyes and see the paths you are creating for yourself and where they lead.  Thinking of your future self, and who it is or what it is you wish to become is far more beneficial.  From this vantage point, you become aware of the subtle changes you can be making now, to become that person you envision!

Allow yourself to enjoy your life’s journey!

Hugs,

Karen
